It looks like a Mustang again

No updates for a long time. Anyway, assembly-phase continues and part by part it goes towards completion. There is a few pictures about the current status. Next and final big task ahead of us is electrical works.

Brake System

I was looking for a big front brake kit for my Mustang II-style front end, low profile rear disc brakes and compact size master cylinder solution with good brake pedal feel under my foot. Wilwood's product line-up had everything i was looking for, plus their aluminum brake fluid reservoir pods looks outstanding :)

  • Separate master cylinders for front brakes (1" bore) and for rear brakes (7/8" bore), third one is for the clutch
  • Aluminum remote brake fluid reservoir pods
  • Front brakes: 6-piston caliber, 12.19" rotor, aluminum hub
  • Rear brakes: 4-piston low profile caliber, 11" rotor with parking brake
  • Lokar parking brake (floor mounted)

Under the hood there will be 4.6L 32V SVT engine with iron block. The engine is based on "Terminator" engine construction with some modifications:

Seats

Seats are ready for installation as well. I chose Sparco R100 to the front, rear seats are original. Mach 1 style upholstery is custom made by Verhoomo Eine.

Gauge Bezel and Center Console

I bought SpeedHut Gauges, they had everything i was looking for this time. There's a few aftermarket bezels available but i decided to do this by myself for perfect fitment. So, two big holes are for 4 1/2" gauges and four small ones for 2 1/16" gauges. Hard task, but in the end both bezel and gauges fits perfectly.

I decided to make center console by myself instead of buying plastic one. It was harder task than I expected. It just needs some filler, paint and vinyl.

Hood

Final version of the hood is made by KustomCars. Now it fits perfectly, provides needed extra clearance and looks exactly like i wanted it. At this point all the effort of making a custom hood feels worth it.

Safety Cage

I decided to go with six point roll/safety cage. It offers some safety during race events and it doesn't make everyday use too complicated.

The cage is made by Pentti Luuppala and it's designed to meet FHRA regulations.

Rear suspension

The rear suspension package is the RC-114 triangulated 4-bar coilover kit from Rod & Custom Motorsports, with some modifications.

9 inch rear axle:
- Custom-built 3rd member: Strange heavy duty case, True-Trac differential
- Currie 9+ housing and 31-spline axles
- Wilwood brakes

The front suspension and steering package is the RC-107 from Rod & Custom Motorsports, with some modifications.

Rear valance

It's not a major change, but the rear valance is something that I'm proud of! After the reversing lights were removed, both ends of the valance were modified for a perfect fit. Such a piece of metal took some hours of work, but it was well worth it.

The plastic front spoiler is quite flabby and it definitely needed some reinforcement. After making a steel frame, we preassembled the front end and even made a license plate frame. It 's starting to look like a Mustang!

A vision of clean appearance

The following modifications were made for a cleaner appearance, while keeping the shapes of the modified parts as close to original design as possible.
  • Cast rear quarter panel extensions were replaced with steel extensions made from scratch
  • Cast side vents were replaced with steel vents made from scratch, which are also functional
  • Side marker lights were removed
  • Other minor changes only visible to the trained eye

Fixing, adjusting, welding

The 2013-14 winter season meant a lot of hard work at the garage:
  • Fixing, adjusting and welding of body panels
  • Body stiffening (sub-frame connectors & extra welding)

Body clean-up

The Body was glass bead blasted and the results were quite promising. Most of the typical rust spots in a '69 bodyshell needed some attention, such as the floor panels in the driver and passenger side footwells.

The starting point

This "beauty" was still in everyday use. It wasn't too shiny anymore, but all the parts were there and it had a decent body shell to start with.
